Borough Council urges your voluntary
compliance to assist in stabilizing sewer rates. A number of properties have illegal
connections to the Boroughs sanitary sewer system, which in part, is creating an
artificially high cost for sewerage treatment.
Currently the Borough is doing what it
can to stabilize and reduce these costs. Property owners can help reduce the amount of
inflow and infiltration into the sanitary sewer system by disconnecting any sump pump,
downspout and/or floor drain connected to the sanitary sewer system. Not only does the
discharge from these sources significantly increase your sewer bills, but also sump pumps
illegally connected to the sewer system could possibly permit dangerous gases to enter
your property.
Sump pumps used to discharge from
laundry tubs and wash basins are also illegal and pose a potential health hazard. However,
sump pumps that harmlessly discharge outside, onto the ground, are not illegal and do not
need attention.
If work is required to redirect a sump
pump, downspout, and/or floor drain, you can do it yourself or call any plumber licensed
by the Borough. If you have any questions or need technical assistance, call the
Boroughs Code Enforcement Office 269-8755.
