   Minquas Cannon Project

The Cannon (An 1855 Dahlgren 12 pounder Boat Howitzer, listed on the National Registry of Surviving Cannons) graced the entrance to the Minquas Fire Co. on East Lancaster Avenue for many years.  When Minquas relocated to their new building in 2013, the Cannon was removed and restoration was begun.
Phase 1 consisted of restoring the Minquas Cannon. We were able to cover the $7,000 cost of the restoration, which included adding the missing tail, wheels, painting, etc.  Now that   the cannon was restored, we moved onto Phase 2 the construction and preparation for the pedestal; including trenching and stone work at a cost of $8,828.30. The pedestal will    serve as the permanent resting place for the cannon. We are excited to report we have begun Phase 3 of the project to include lighting, anchor chain around the top of the cannon, landscaping and engraving of the Civil War soldier’s names, as well as, Downingtown’s recipient of the Medal of Honor, Sgt. Pinkerton Vaughn, who was a U.S. Marine. We are estimating our fundraising needs to complete Phase 3 at $25,000.

We are proud to have undertaken this project, resulting in the recognition and  appreciation for the service and sacrifices these soldiers made to serve our Country and  protect our freedom. That is why we are asking for your help to achieve the final phase of our project.  With your donation, together we can accomplish our goal to proudly display the cannon so our community has the opportunity to learn the history pertaining to the cannon. We are currently planning the Dedication of the Minquas Cannon; as we continue to raise funds to complete Phase 3.

Donations made payable to Borough of Downingtown, Cannon Account, 4 W. Lancaster Avenue, Downingtown, PA  19335 will gratefully be accepted.
We thank you, in advance, for your generous support!
